Weeks 3 and 4: My first Platformer and Beginning Pixel Art

Woo! I took on a much bigger project with my third game tutorial, AND things got super busy at my day job.

So that means I have two weeks worth of progress to share.

Here’s what I tackled in weeks 3 and 4 of learning game dev.

What I Made

I made my first platformer with 3 levels! There’s even a start menu and a win screen.

I followed the last tutorial in my gamedev.tv course. I’ll be sure to write a full review of the course soon!

My favorite part was animating the player character and tying the animations to player actions like jumping and running!

I also started learning the very basics of pixel art. I don’t have much to show for it yet except for these spheres:

Resources from this Week

I started the gamedev.tv Pixel Art Fundamentals course, in addition to finishing their Godot 2D course.

I also started reading A Playful Production Process by Richard Lemarchand, which is very helpful for learning how to ideate and iterate.

What Went Well

I had a lot more success this week with following the tutorials! I didn’t have as many small typos, and was pretty successful recreating the tutorials.

I had a lot of fun designing different game levels and was pleasantly surprised at how simple it is once you’ve set up your tile map.

Where I Struggled

My biggest struggle this week was finding the time! But once I was able to sit down and practice, everything went pretty well.

Goals for Next Week

I’m going to give this course from GDQuest a try! It’s another intro to Godot 2D course, but I think solidifying what I’ve already learned will be great for me.
